Diversity in Business Life: Compliance Factor or Reason for Success?

In today’s business world diversity can be defined as acknowledging each individual’s uniqueness and developing systems and infrastructures that utilize different values, skills, and abilities in order to create happier business environments and more successful business results.

In the last 10 years, 13 National Diversity Charters have been developed with the goal of encouraging companies across Europe to develop diversity policies. The organizations undersigning the charters commit to promote diversity and equal opportunities to all employees regardless of personal differences such as age, disability, gender, race, ethnic origin, religion or sexual orientation.

Today, more than 7,100 European organizations from public or private sectors, with a total of 13.6 million employees, have signed the 13 National Charters. Every year, another 500 to 600 is added.

According to European Commission* data, 95% of charter members indicate that signing of the charter has accelerated the development of diversity policies and activities within their organization. Although the priorities drastically change from country to country, majority of companies focus on gender equality (48%) followed by age group (46% for senior, 45% for young people), disability (44%) and racial or ethnic background (28%). (Source: European Commision: Overview of Diversity Management Implementation and Impact amongst Diversity Charte Signatories in the European Union (2014), Belgium, Ocober 2014.)
